Yank Converters

Three key components set the Super Stock line of converters apart from the competition:

  1. The unique 21 blade stator was developed by General Motors and will see duty in the upcoming 2004 rear wheel drive Cadillacs with 5 speed automatics. By using a very aggressive 21 blade stator vs. the conventional 15-18 blade model, Yank is now able to offer a converter with the starting line thrust of a 4000+ rpm stall converter with the drivability of a 2800 rpm stall converter. The large windows between blades allows a good supply of oil to flow through, ensuring very high efficiency and low heat.

  2. A large 258mm (10.0") clutch. This pure carbon-lined clutch is much larger than the 245mm clutches used by the competition. This larger converter clutch will lock-up faster and will lessen the amount of nagging slip codes so common with high stall torque converters. The Super Stock converters use the popular 245mm (9.5") pump and turbine configuration. This ensures lighter weight, more efficiency in higher stall applications, along with higher shift extension than larger 258mm converters (such as the Pro Yank series). 

  3. The revolutionary billet cover is Yank's lightest to date...even while utilizing the oversized 258mm clutch. Total weight for the converter is 28 lbs, 10oz. This is two lbs lighter than any other Yank converter.

Converter Comparison: SS3600/3800 vs. Yank's 2 most popular converters

Stall Torque Ratio: The SS3600/3800 is higher than the ST3500 and YPT4000. For the SS3600 it is 2.50. For the SS 3800 it is 2.55. This will make the Super Stock converters feel tighter driving around town and will enhance drivability for cars running less gear (such as 2.73 and 3.23 gears). This will also hit the tires much harder at the starting line, a real plus for those running sticky tires.

Efficiency: The SS3600/3800 is within 1% of efficiency of the ST3500 and YPT4000 in the 5000+ rpm range and exceeds them both in the 2500-4500 range.

Shift extension: The SS3600 has 4700-4800 rpm shift extension. The SS3800 has 4900-5000 rpm shift extension. This compares to the ST3500 shift extension of 4800-4900 rpms and the YPT4000 of 5500-5600 rpms. Bottom line: for cars with less gear, smaller cams or power adders such as nitrous oxide, less shift extension can be better. For maximum ET and mph running naturally aspirated, choose a converter with more shift extension.
 


Posi lock-up clutch:

Yank Converters has made a breakthrough with the Posi lock-up clutch. By placing proprietary bearings between the lock-up clutch and the housing, while utilizing the highest grade carbon ceramic or kevlar linings, the converter can actually lock-up under the high torque load of a power adder like nitrous oxide or a blower! This positive lock-up action takes place when the engine torque exceeds 475 lb. ft. This will give the racer torque to the tires, close to that of a manual transmission.  This is a Yank exclusive!

6 Bolt Mounting Lugs:

Race converters place high demands on driveline components, especially when running a power adder.  Yank has constructed an exclusive lightweight billet cover that incorporates 6 mounting lugs as opposed to the conventional 3.  This will spread the load to other points on the flex plate which reduces distortion and adds safety and strength.

3.0 Stall Torque Ratio Thruster:

Yank can build converters with very high stall torque ratios if the customer requires it.  The Torque Thruster 3.0 series converters utilize a 3.0 stall torque ratio that multiplies engine torque 3.0 times at the input shaft.  This super-high stall torque ratio will absolutely punish the tires and as a result, sticky tires are highly recommended.  The ideal gear tends to fall in the 2.73-3.23 range. The Torque Thruster trades no top-end efficiency (over the stock converter)  for its increased leverage at the starting line. Caution needs to be exercised as the very high stall torque ratio can make starting line traction a challenge without the proper tires and suspension modifications. For customers who want to "roast the tires"...this converter is for you!! A side benefit to the high stall torque ratio is that the Thruster Converters will have snappier throttle response and require less pedal to get the car moving.  Just the ticket for a daily driver.

The Yank 9" Thruster Pro converter was introduced in 2000. Since then, it has re-defined the EFI performance converter category! It uses a smaller, lighter pump and turbine with an exclusive stator that multiplies torque in the 2.70 range.  With stall speeds of 4000+, the 9" Thruster Pro is the preferred converter for serious racers who choose not to run a lot of gear.  For example, many of our customers cut 60' times in the high 1.50 to low 1.60 range with 3.23 gears, ET Streets and bone stock motor. Customers with heads/cam upgrades are pulling 1.45 60' times!  The mid-range torque and horsepower surpass that of any Yank converter or any other made by our competitors too.  This converter is hot!!

Pro Yank Series Converters:

Power adders place special demands on converters.  It is important for a converter to have adequate "holding power" while at the same time, placing the motor in a higher power band through increased stall.  The Pro Yank converters give you the best of both!  First, each Pro Yank is custom built around "your" power adder. The stall speeds are rated for use with power adders and will therefore, be right where you need it to be.  Next, the Posi lock-up clutch will bring efficiency close to 100% by locking-up under load. Finally, the clutch materials are built to take the higher demands of running on the "juice".  The Pro Yank Extremes use the exotic Kevlar linings.

Ultra Yank Converters:

The Ultra Yank is the ultimate converter for racing a naturally aspirated LS-1 or LT-1.  We utilize the modern 225mm GM converter that is extremely efficient in the 4000+ stall speeds. While the regular Yank is most efficient in the 3000 range and the Super Yank is most efficient in the 3500 range, the Ultra Yank has its highest efficiency in the 4000-4600 stall speed range. Like any converter, the stall speeds and stall torque ratios of the Ultra Yanks are highly adjustable.  Stall speeds can range from 4000-6000 and stall torque ratio can range from 1.90-2.66.  The Ultra Yanks are available with a lightweight billet cover with 6 mounting lugs.  They also come with the Posi lock-up clutch with Kevlar linings.  This converter can be characterized as a "stock-eliminator" converter with a positive locking clutch.  You can have your cake and eat it too with the Ultra Yank!
